2020 - 2021 Nesting Season > RECAP

This past year, the egg in the CahowCam 1 burrow unfortunately failed prior to hatching), however the chick in CahowCam 2 hatched on March 9th and fledged on June 5th (see highlights below).

CahowCam 2 > 2021 Season UPDATES

UPDATE: January 16th 2021 | The male has returned and we are now waiting for the female.

UPDATE: January 17th 2021 @ 19:11 | The female has returned!

UPDATE: January 17th 2021 @ 20:25 | And we have an egg!

UPDATE: March 9th 2021 | We are on Hatch Watch as we started hearing peeping from inside the egg overnight and have now seen a pip!

UPDATE: March 9th 2021 @ 21:42 | It has hatched and we have the first glimpse of a still wet chick!

Update June 3rd 0:14 AM: She is now back in the burrow resting, having just spent the past 2 hours exploring and exercising, whilst approaching the cliff edge multiple times. She may go back out again tonight before sunrise or wait until tomorrow night, but either way she will be fledging in the next few nights. Please keep checking back.

Update June 3rd 6:00 AM: After several more excursions throughout the night, our chick is still here settled back into her burrow for the day! So another mostly sleeepless night for our team coming up tonight...

Update June 3rd 9:40 PM: We are back on fledge watch and hope to be able to track her movements again tonight.

Update June 3rd 10:40 PM: Whilst our chick was out exercising, a rain squall passed over accompanied by several adult Cahows that buzzed the colony with their aerial acrobatics, along with “Stormy” who promptly re-entered the burrow.

Update June 4th 2:00 AM: When the chick attempted to re-enter the burrow, Stormy, its ex roommate that had been evicted a few weeks ago, refused to let it in. It took several attempts and then a very load fight out of camera view in the tunnel, then more fighting visible on CahowCam 2 before the Cahow chick regained control of the burrow and eventually settled in for the night.

Update June 5th 10:43 PM: “Poppy” our newly named chick has fledged!!! > Stay tuned for last Health Check and fledging highlights…

CahowCam 1 > 2021 Season UPDATES

UPDATE: January 9th 2021 @ 6:25 pm | A Cahow has returned to the burrow after spending a few weeks at sea, if it is the female, her single egg can be expected within hours. Watch LIVE below >

UPDATE: January 9th 2021 @ 10:20 pm | Despite having spent over 8 weeks apart its mate returns within 4 hours, with the egg expected imminently…

UPDATE: January 9th 2021 @ 11:24 pm | Right on schedule we have our egg!!!

UPDATE: January 14th 2021 @ 11:00 pm | A second Cahow returned to the burrow and interacted quite aggressively with the incubating male, at first appearing to be a younger prospecting bird trying to take over the nest. Jeremy however, after reviewing the footage, has concluded that it is most likely the female returning very early and the male still being of good weight, does not wish to handover the egg yet.

UPDATE: We can unfortunately now confirm that the CahowCam1 egg has failed this season, please see Jeremy’s update below.
